The first of a 3 part course on how to photograph people in the studio. The format of the courses is a hands-on workshop with classroom sessions in the morning and practical photo shoots in the afternoon. It is recommended that part one is covered before parts two and three, however, the courses are designed so that part 3 can be completed before part two.

As well as covering the technical aspects of studio photography we also explore how to interact with your model to get the best images. In part one we start with studio flash, looking at shutter sync speeds, the best method of triggering flash units, the effects that different modifiers have, how light to subject distance affects the light quality and some classic lighting set-ups. We also cover how to choose the right lens and the best angle and height for different shots and how to use reflectors and flags to both add and remove light. The majority of what we study during the day only requires one light meaning that you can go away and practice with very limited equipment. After this one day workshop you should be able to confidently work with both inexperienced and experienced models in a photographic studio and achieve a variety of different moods and effects.

Students are encouraged to submit work for critique after the workshop. Refreshments are provided including a light lunch, please advise us in advance of any special dietary requirements.

What previous students have said about this course: ‘As I complete beginner when it comes to Photography and studio work, I was very much of an open mind when it came to attending the beginners course to Studio Flash Photography. However, with Andrew Appleton’s patient instruction and the excellent facilities available, the pace of the course was set precisely right for my level. I learnt many things which I would not have even considered and realised a whole new world opening up for me. The course started by covering the technical side which was key to getting the right picture in the afternoon session and was surprisingly interesting considering it was based on Physics!! The afternoon session which involved working with a professional model is not something many people would ordinarily have the opportunity to do, especially with one who had so much enthusiasm whilst having bundles of patience. I am very pleased with what I have learnt and the pictures I took will compliment my portfolio perfectly. I was made to feel very comfortable and the group size was just right so it made the day much more involved. I would thoroughly recommend this for anyone with an interest in learning Studio Photography and would definitely attend further courses hosted by Andrew Appleton/Village Studios. The only downside for the day would be it had to end!’
